CONNECT

EVERYONE is welcome at CONNECT!
Our weekly CONNECT program is Epiphany’s year-round space to grow in our Catholic faith, in friendship, and service. Together with fellow parishioners, you’ll explore church teaching, theological perspectives, and the rich spiritual traditions of our Catholic heritage.

CONNECT brings together three dynamic groups:

  • IGNITE – Epiphany Young Adults

  • MILLENN-X – Millennials & Gen-Xers

  • SEEKERS – Our senior wisdom sisters & brothers

Each evening begins with fellowship around a delicious, free, home-cooked meal. Then, the groups rotate through one of three experiences:

  1. Prayer, faith-sharing, or worship

  2. Faith formation presentations with synodal discussion, led by Fr. Jim Mayzik SJ, Faith Formation Director Samuel Newton, or a guest speaker

  3. Member-led presentations, where participants share their own insights and experiences

At CONNECT you’ll enjoy community, deepen your faith, and open yourself to the surprising ways the Holy Spirit works in our lives.

Young Adults ALPHA Course

Our next Young Adults Alpha Course begins on Thursday January 29th at 7pm in Epiphany's parish hall.

Alpha is a series of interactive sessions that allow you to explore the Christian faith, ask questions and share your point of view in a safe and friendly environment.

Sessions include:

Is there more to life than this?

Who is Jesus? Why did he die?

How can we have faith?

Why and how do I read the bible?

What about the church?

How does it work?
Each session includes food, a short video  and a discussion at the end where you can share your thoughts. At any point, if you think Alpha isn't for you, that's not a problem.

There's no pressure and no charge.

The course runs for 12 weeks. And there is a wonderful 24 hour offsite retreat that involves a hike, a Mass, delicious dinners, and the visit of. the Holy Spirit! Come to the first one and see if it’s for you.

This is a great place to invite a friend who may be curious about the Christian faith. The Alpha course has proven to be an effective tool for awakening faith in people who are on the fringe of parish life, faithful Catholics and those outside the faith.

SEDER MEAL

Experience the ritual seder meal that Jesus and his disciples had at the Last Supper. All are invited to participate in the prayers and symbolism of the meal that celebrates the biblical story of the Israelites’ liberation from slavery in Egypt. The seder has many elements of our Mass celebration. We will experience the seder meal in the Parish Hall at 7pm.

Holy Thursday Commemoration of the Last Supper

Holy Thursday is the commemoration of the Last Supper of Jesus Christ, when he established the sacrament of the Eucharist prior to his arrest and crucifixion. Join us at 7:30pm in the church as we celebrate the institution of the priesthood, the Mandatum (washing of the feet), and participate in the transfer of the Eucharist to a place of prayer and repose—symbolizing Jesus’ agony in the garden--before Good Friday. The main altar of the church is stripped bare to symbolize the abandonment of Jesus by his disciples.

Tenebrae

You are encouraged to join us in the church at 10am on the morning of Good Friday and 10am on the morning of Holy Saturday for the haunting, ancient liturgy of matins and lauds, which commemorates the final days of Jesus’ life. The gradual extinguishing of candles on a special triangular stand represents the apostles deserting Christ and the world falling into darkness.

Good Friday Passion of our Lord

We recreate the moment of Jesus’ crucifixion in a solemn liturgical service (not a Mass) where we give reverence to the Cross, reflect on the suffering of Jesus, his love for humanity, and the atonement of the sins of the world. The service begins at 3pm in the church.

EASTER VIGIL

We celebrate the arrival of Easter on Saturday evening at 8pm, beginning the Mass in total darkness until it is pierced with a new light that signifies the gift we receive from the risen Christ. At this most grand of solemnities, we celebrate the story of salvation unfolding throughout history, in a liturgy that is inspired by both the Old and New Testaments. On Sunday, we joyously celebrate the resurrection of Jesus at a family Mass at 11am and at a young adults Mass at 7:30pm.

BILINGUAL MASS OF THE EPIPHANY Dia de los Reyes

BILINGUAL MASS OF THE EPIPHANY Dia de los Reyes

Although the Catholic Church worldwide will celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany this coming weekend (January 3 & 4th), the Church of the Epiphany will have a special celebration of the arrival of the Three Kings on its official day--the twelfth day of Christmas, Tuesday evening January 6th, at 7pm. The feast is especially meaningful to us, of course, because it is our parish family's feast day.

Traditionally, the story of the (non-Jewish) Magi's journey has symbolized the inclusion of all nations in God's plan of redemption, with Jesus the Christ as Savior of all people. And to highlight that point (and make it all the more joyous) we will be celebrate it with a bilingual (Spanish and English) Mass at 7pm Tuesday evening.

Parts of the Mass will be prayed in English and parts in Spanish; we will have festive music from our Latino sisters and brothers; and to top it all off, we'll share a delicious meal catered by Casa Adela, the famous Lower East Side destination for authentic Latin food.

We joyfully invite you to celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany (Día de los Reyes)  with us, as we continue our mission to renew our community and city with the light and love of Jesus.

FAITH IN CONTEXT

Every Sunday, the Scriptures proclaimed at Mass carry layers of meaning drawn from their original history, culture, and theology. Faith in Context at the Epiphany takes you behind the words to uncover those layers. Each week, we explore the setting of the readings—what was happening in the ancient world, how the first hearers would have understood them, and why the Church places them before us today. By seeing the bigger picture, we enter the liturgy with greater insight, a deeper appreciation for God’s Word, and a renewed sense of how it speaks to our lives here and now. Join us in the PARISH HALL each Sunday evening from 6pm to 7pm, just in time for the 7:30pm Mass.

Alpha Program

Alpha is a unique “meet-you-where-you-are” course. Participants can benefit from the relaxed atmosphere and low-pressure setting. Alpha is a series of sessions exploring the basics of our Christian faith, typically run over eleven weeks. We don’t assume any background knowledge of or belief in Christianity and everyone is welcome.

Each weekly Alpha meeting consists of

1) A delicious, home-cooked meal (and time to meet new friends),

2) Screening of a short film which looks at a different question around faith and is designed to create conversation.

3) A wide-ranging non-judgmental discussion of the ideas and themes in the film. This is the moment when the Holy Spirit truly does its work on all the participants!
